Abstract
1, 036, 008. Resin-impregnated paper; paper. K. H. SCHEUFELEN and K. E. SCHEUFELEN, [trading as FIRMA PAPIERFABRIK SCHEUFELEN]. Oct. 11, 1963 [Oct. 11, 1962], No. 40322/63. Heading D2B. [Also in Division B5] At least one layer of a compressed laminated plate comprises a porous paper saturated with a synthetic resin formed of a major part of a thermosetting resin having dispersed there through a minor part of a thermoplastic polymeric resin in the form of discrete particles ranging from 0. 1 to 1.0 microns in size, which thermoplastic resin has film-forming properties after drying from an aqueous dispersion thereof-although no such film is formed in the paper. The ratio of the resins is preferably 10: 1. The thermosetting resin may be phenol-, urea-, cresol-, or melamine formaldehyde. The thermoplastic resin may be a polymer or mixed polymer of an acrylic acid ester, a vinyl ester, a vinyl ether, butadiene, ethylene, propylene, butylene, vinyl chloride or styrene. The paper may be impregnated with a solution in water of the thermosetting resin with an aqueous dispersion of the thermoplastic resin; alternatively, the paper is first impregnated with an aqueous dispersion of the thermoplastic resin, dried and optionally printed, and then impregnated with the thermosetting resin. In the embodiment shown, a laminate comprises a transparent or translucent overlay paper 1, a decorative paper 2, on underlay paper 3, a core 4 of several layers of kraft paper and a backing layer 5. Of these, core 4 is impregnated with a phenol formaldehyde and the others with a melamine formaldehyde, which in the case of layer 2 at least also contains the thermoplastic resin. In example 1, a porous paper is impregnated with 20 parts of a 50% aqueous dispersion of vinyl proprionate or butadiene-styrene in 100 parts of melamine-formaldehyde precondensate with 100 parts of water or water-alcohol. Following drying, the paper is placed on top of a stack of layers of sodapulp or kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde and united thereto by hot pressing. In example 3, the melamine formaldehyde precondensate is replaced by a phenol-formaldehyde precondensate. In example 3, the vinyl proprionate is replaced by a copolymer of vinyl acetate with a vinyl ester of a long chain acid or with an acrylic acid ethyl ester. In example 6, the paper is impregnated with the thermoplastic resin of example 1, dried, impregnated with phenol- or melamine formaldehyde and hot pressed, e.g. as in example 1.
