Abstract

1,250,056. Decorative laminates. FORMICA CORP. 26 March, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 15951/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B1-B2] A decorative laminate comprises a heat-andpressure-consolidated assembly in superposed relationship of a decorative layer e.g. of paper, employing a thermosetting resin which does not undergo significant colour deterioration during the consolidation e.g. a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a core layer e.g. of one or more kraft paper sheets, employing a thermosetting phenolic resin, and, on the surface of the core layer remote from the decorative layer, a coating composition which is the dried residue of either:-(1) an aqueous acrylic polymer dispersion in which the polymeric content has a particle size between 0À1 and 0À4 micron, said coating composition having a minimum film formation temperature between 0‹ and 20‹ C., a Takon hardness between 0À5 and 3À0, and a transition temperature between - 20‹ C. and + 30‹ C., or (2) an aqueous dispersion of (A) a water-dispersible vinyl acetate polymer having a molecular weight of at least 20,000, a cold flow test value between 20 and 2000 and a particle size between 0À1 and 25 microns, (B) from 1% to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the vinyl acetate polymer, of a protective colloid, (C) from 0À1% to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the dispersion, of a water-soluble starch, and (D) from 0 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the vinyl acetate polymer, of a plasticizer. The acrylic polymer may be a homo- or co-polymer, many suitable monomers being specified. The vinyl acetate polymer may be a homo- or co-polymer. Specified colloids are carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, gum agar, gelatine and gum arabic. The coating composition is applied by conventional techniques, e.g. reverse roller, air knife, knife coating or spraying either to a resin-impregnated core sheet, or, when a plurality of core sheets are to be used in the core layer, to an unimpregnated core sheet. In a preferred embodiment, a sheet of aluminium foil is interposed between the decorative layer and the core layer prior to consolidation; in a further embodiment, a sheet of a blend of polymethyl methacrylate and polyvinylidene fluoride is superposed on the decorative layer prior to consolidation. The coated surface of a laminate according to the invention may be bonded to a substrate of wood, plywood, hardboard, cement-asbestos board or particle board by a non-pressure-sensitive adhesive e.g. a polyvinyl acetate emulsion, resorcinol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde. Quantitative examples are given.
