Abstract
1,023,551. Staircases. BROCKHOUSE STEEL STRUCTURES LTD. April 30, 1962 [April 29, 1961], No. 15600/61. Heading E1V. A staircase comprises a single stringer 6 secured to a crosshead 7 anchored on opposite sides of the stringer to a trimmer beam 8, or other fixed member of a landing, the other end of the staircase being slidably supported on a plate 14 extending between brackets 15 on the trimmer beam 8 of the next lower landing. The crosshead is secured to the beam either by ears 11 extending through the trimmer beam and pivoted to ears (not shown) on the other side of the beam, or by studs (not shown) passing through the crosshead and the beam and carrying resilient bushes 18 one on each side of the beam, a nut screwed on the free end of the stud pressing a washer against the adjacent bush so that the stud is in tension but is capable of limited movement relative to the beam. To facilitate its sliding on the plate 14 the plate 13 may carry a cup (not shown) partly accommodating a ball running in a track in the plate 14. The beams 8 extend between beams 9 each end of each beam 9 being pivoted to a stanchion 10 and each stanchion being rockable about its foot to allow for subsistence of the ground on which the building stands. Each stair is mounted on the stringer 6 through a sheet metal pressing 24.
