A lightweight roller skate is such that size 8 weighs not more than 2 to 2“ lb. The sole plate 0 is secured, e.g. by bolts or rivets 11, to a lightweight boot 12 with a flexible sole 13 and is carried on two roller assemblies 14, 15. A lightweight channel metal reinforcing member 16, secured to the under surface and extending the whole length of the sole plate, comprises a base 17 and flanges 18. Preferably the widths of the base 17 and flanges 18 are respectively approximately one-third and one-quarter of the width of the widest part of the sole plate. Each roller assembly comprises a bracket 19 and an axle carrying member 20 resiliently secured together. Two rollers. 23 are mounted on each axle 22 and the axle mounting is arranged so that the axles can swivel slightly. Brackets 19 are secured between flanges 18 by rivets 25, 26 extending through member 16 and sole plate 10. The two roller assemblies are connected by a bracing stay 24. A further rivet 29 secures the forward ends of sole plate 10 and base part 17 together. A rubber brake block 27 fits into the forward end of the reinforcing member and is secured by a nut and bolt 28. The sole plate and reinforcing member may be made of aluminium alloy.
