Abstract

Synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, alkyd resins, natural and synthetic rubbers, polyurethanes, foamed polyurethane and foamed rubber are rendered antimicrobial by adding thereto N-(dichlorofluoro - methyl - thio) - phthalimide. Example 1 refers to the addition of the active ingredient to a polyurethane elastomer. Examples 3 and 4 refer to the addition of the active ingredient to alkyd resin compositions comprising a castor oil alkyd resin (a reaction product of phthalic anhydride with glycerol and castor oil) and a melamine resin (a reaction product of melamine and formaldehyde) in Example 3, and a reaction product of phthalic anhydride with glycerol and fatty acids in the form of a 60% benzene solution (Example 4), in admixture with titanium dioxide, calcium naphthenate, silicone oil, glycollic acid butyl ester, butanol, benzine, terpentinol and lead and cobalt naphthenates. Example 2 refers to the addition of the active ingredient to polyvinyl chloride, and Examples 5 and 6 to polyvinyl chloride compositions so treated. Examples 7 and 8 refer to the addition of the active ingredient to a polyurethane foamed material and to a foamed rubber based on natural latex, respectively. Example 9 refers to the addition of the active ingredient to crepe and soft, light-coloured rubber regenerate.ALSO:Packing paper made from a wood pulp-cellulose mixture is rendered anti-microbial by adding to the pulp N-(dichlorofluoro-methyl-thio)-phthalimide (Example 10).ALSO:Organic, e.g. cellulosic, materials are rendered anti-microbiol by adding to said materials N-(dichlorofluoro-methyl-thio)-phthalimide.
