Abstract

A composition comprises a blend of a synthetic organic thermoplastic polymer and a filler having an average particle size between 5 and 100 microns, said filler comprising a sulphate of a Group II metal in association with a higher fatty acid or a salt or an ester thereof. The polymer may be derived from ethylene and/or propylene, butylene, styrene, vinyl chloride or acrylonitrile and optionally may be blended with elastomers such as natural or synthetic rubber. The preferred fillers are those associated with Group II metal salts, preferably calcium or barium sulphate associated (i.e. coated or coprecipitated) with calcium or barium stearate. The compositions also may contain stabilizers (phosphite, phenolic, or sulphur compounds) and/or peroxide cross-linking agents, and may be used in the production of pipe.
