Abstract

1,022,677. Grinding. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 6, 1962], No. 39245/63. Heading B3D. An arrangement on a surface grinding machine for controlling the feed of the grinding tool on the attainment of a required grinding dimension comprises a vibratory resilient feeler which is arranged to make contact with the tool when this dimension is attained, which feeler projects from the work carrier towards the grinding tool perpendicularly to the plane of grinding. A surface grinder has a grinding head 4 movable vertically on a guide of the bed and comprising a grinding disc or a number of abrasive segments 3. A rotatable work-table 2 is movable horizontally on the bed from a loading/unloading position to an operative position with respect to the grinding head. Workpieces 7 are held on the table 2 by electromagnetic means 6 energized through carbon brushes 12, 12 contacting rails 11, 11 on the table. A feeler T is mounted on the table 2 with adjustment for height. When the feeler contacts the grinding tool, a control pulse is generated, e.g. piezo-electrically, inductively or capacitatively, and is fed through a pre-amplifier V, capacitative or inductive couplings 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, electric filter Si and amplifier N to a control relay R. At a predetermined workpiece thickness, the downward feed of the grinding head is stopped. Simultaneously, or after a time interval, the grinding head is moved upwardly, rotation of the grinding tool is stopped, and the worktable is moved to the loading/unloading position. More than one feeler may be used, set at different levels, e.g. a first feeler effective to slow down the feed and a second feeler effective to stop the feed. A feeler which has emitted its control pulse may be lowered to an inoperative position, being returned to operative position at the beginning of the next cycle. Alternatively, a single feeler may be selectively moved to several control positions. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 850,023.
