An electrically propelled road or rail vehicle has a propelling system which comprises for each of two independently driven wheels 10 or groups of wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle, a multiphase induction motor, means to couple the motor rotor 15 directly or indirectly (e.g. by gearing) to the wheel or wheels, and means for supplying variable frequency A.C. to the motor stators; alternatively, as shown, the two motors may have a common stator 16. The motor armatures 15 are of the squirrel cage type, carried by bearings 20, 21, and the coupling means include shafts 11 and universal joints 12. The supply means may comprise switchgear and semi-conductors supplied from an internal combustion engine driven generator or a battery or a fuel cell.
