Abstract

1,022,444. Friction clutches. COVENTRY GAUGE & TOOL CO. Ltd. June 12, 1962 [June 14, 1961], No. 21423/61. Heading F2C. A disc or cone clutch 10 is actuated by a control collar 1 splined on the hub 2 and provided with internal profiled working surfaces 3 engaging roller thrust elements 14, 15 movable radially between wedge surfaces 8, 9 on pressure and backing-plates 6, 7. Each roller 14 is carried by needle bearings on a spindle 15, and roller recesses (17, not shown) are provided in the faces of plates 6, 7 so that the roller engages only the profiled surface 3 while the spindle 15 engages only the wedge surfaces 8, 9. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), an intermediate roller 15a is fitted between the outer roller 14a and spindle 15b and bears against the surface 8 of pressure plate 6.
