Abstract

1,022,342. Power-assisted steering. HOBOURN - EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1962 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 1349/62. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In a valve for power-assisted steering systems in which a spring-loaded by-pass valve member 6 is subject to the pressure difference across a restriction 18 in the supply line 2, 3 so as to tend to maintain constant flow, an additional restriction, e.g. in the form of a throat ring A, is positioned upstream of the restriction 18 but downstream of an end part 6A of the valve member on which the supply pressure can act. This additional restriction results in a fall in flow velocity at high speeds and reduces excessive heat generation, e.g. on motorways when power assistance for steering is not being used. The additional restriction may be formed by an enlargement on the valve member or by an apertured sleeve on the end plug 8, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). A relief valve 11 opening from chamber 14 to the by-pass outlet 20 through ports 19, is carried in the valve member. A force-fitted ball 10 provides a spring abutment.
