Abstract

1,021,885. Electro-photographic processes. MINNESOTA & MINING MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 20, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 35889/62. Heading G2H. [Also in Division H1] An electro-photographic material suitable for electrolytic development has over the photo-conductive layer, though not necessarily in direct contact therewith, a continuous, glossy, transparent, cohesive, and water-permeable layer containing a film-forming silica, this layer being substantially free of alkali-metal ions. The silica-containing layer is intended to improve the contrast of the developed image and is stated to be more suitable for this purpose than layers of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrolidone, dimethyl hydantoin formaldehyde, or gelatin. A layer containing a developer material may be provided between the photoconductive layer and the silica-containing layer or developer materials, such as electrolytically-reducible dyes or salts of zinc and silver, may be included in the silica containing layer. A wide variety of other materials may be added to the silica containing layer including inorganic materials, filter dyes, and other organic materials. In the embodiments given, however, silica-containing films are coated directly on to photoconductive layers. Three developers are given for such materials. One consists of an aqueous solution of specified quantities of silver nitrate, ethylene thiourea, magnesium acetate, and acetic acid. Cathodic development is used, the current being passed intermittently to avoid polarisation troubles. A second developer consists of an aqueous solution of silver nitrate and magnesium nitrate. Again intermittent development is used. The third developer is an aqueous solution of nickel chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonia (pH 6. 5). It is suggested that with silver developers the surface may be treated with known photographic sensitizers such as quatenary ammonium halides, saccharine, and ethylene thiourea.
