Abstract

A method of increasing the tensile strength of steels of the kind which strain harden or precipitation harden in which the steel is axially stressed in tension or compression into the plastic range and is stress-relieved in order to maintain the hardness at substantially that of the unstressed steel. The steel may be stress-relieved during or after the plastic stressing, as by heat treatment or subjection to ultrasonic sound waves, or both. Stress-relieving by gas or electric heat in the range 200-800 DEG F. is referred to. If the steel is cold-drawn after the plastic stressing, a second stress-relieving operation may be performed, in the range 200-1000 DEG F. Tabular statements are included giving tensile strength and other physical properties for various plastic stresses, annealing temperatures and holding times. Steels within the following range may be treated: .C.0.18 -0.42 .Mn.1.157-0.74 .P.0.12 -0.016 .S.0.025-0.029 .Si.0.25 .Cr.0.93 .Mo.0.2
