Abstract

A cantilever shelf 4 (or 21) has rearward projections 6 (or 32) at or near its ends for selective engagement through apertures 2 (or 39 )in a pair of posts 1 (or 34), the posts carrying means associated with each aperture and located rearward thereof for releasably engaging the projections after they have been fully inserted through the apertures. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 3), channel posts 1 have apertures 2 in one flange and the projections 6 bear on the bottom edges of these apertures and against the bottom edges of tongues 7 pierced from web of the channel posts 1 and located above the apertures. The projections 6 may have lips to engage behind the tongues 7. Alternatively, the tongues 7 may be treated directly behind the apertures 2 and be themselves apertured to receive the projections 6. In a variant the tongues 7 may be replaced by tubes extending between the limbs of the post 1 in alignment with the apertures 2 to receive the projections 6. Intermediate projections may be provided on long shelves. Posts 1 of adjacent tiers may be interfitted as at 8 (Fig. 3). The shelf 4 may be flat, grid type or have a roller-type supporting surface 9, and may have end walls 11, a backstrip rail or wall 12 and edge stiffeners 13. In another embodiment (Figs 5, 9), the end walls of the shelf 21 are channelled to receive stiffening bars 31 carrying projections 32 and notched 33 to engage the lower edges of the apertures 39 of the posts 34. V-shaped tongues 36 pierced from the web of the channel posts 34 are engaged from below by the projections 32. The posts 34 may have channelled webs to receive the ends of cross bracing members 37, bolted thereto, as at 38. The shelving may extend between floor and ceiling or the posts may be secured to a wall.
