Abstract

1,020,484. Waveguide directional couplers. FERRANTI Ltd. July 5, 1963 [July 14, 1962], No. 27130/62. Heading H1W. A waveguide directional coupler comprises two parallel rectangular waveguide sections 11, 12 having an effective broad wall 13 in which is provided a single slot 14 located to one side of the axes of the waveguides. In the vicinity of the slot the sections 11, 12 together behave as a single septate guide having a broad dimension equal to more than double the broad dimensions a of either of the sections. The septate guide supports both the TE 01 and TE 02 modes and the dimensions of the slot are such that a 90- degree phase difference between the two modes arises over its length. As a result, energy from one input port is equally divided between two output ports. The dimensions b of the sections are reduced sufficiently to prevent propagation of a TE 10 ridged-waveguide mode over the coupling section. To this end, b is made somewhat less than a quarter of the wavelength of the propagated energy. The slot need not extend (as shown) to the narrow walls of the waveguides.' It may be displaced from these walls by a distance not greater than the narrow dimension b. An alternative form of the coupler in which the guides are spaced apart and do not have a common wall, is described.
