Abstract

Sulphur dyes are oxidized on the fibre with an aqueous solution having a pH of 5-9 containing hydrogen peroxide, e.g. 0.1-0.5% by weight, and a water-soluble salt of Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba, e.g. at least 0.5%, which salt is compatible with hydrogen peroxide. Suitable salts are the acetates, chlorides and nitrates of any of the metals and MgSO4. The pH of the solutions may be adjusted by the addition of alkali, e.g. alkali metal or ammonium hydroxides. The oxidation may be carried out in a continuous manner and at 60-140 DEG F. or even at 170 DEG F. Examples are given of oxidizing cotton fabric impregnated with a solution of reduced Sulphur Black 1.
