Abstract
Polymeric sulphur compounds containing the recurring group <FORM:1030303/C1/1> are prepared from the reaction of an alkali or alkaline earth metal thiocarbonate and a sulphur SxCl2, where x is 2-20, at less than 25 DEG C., preferably 2-4 DEG C., until either free sulphur chloride disappears when thiocarbonate is added to it or, in the reverse order of procedure, until free sulphur chloride appears. Initially, sodium thiocarbonate Na2CSy, for example, may be prepared from sodium sulphide and carbon disulphide with the addition of free sulphur to the solution if y is to be greater than 3. The polymer may be purified by consecutive washing with water-methanol and carbon disulphide.
