Abstract
0,5 to 1% of zinc sulphate is added to a zinc sulphide consenbate prior to calcination under oxidizing conditions to obtain zinc oxide. Calcination may be at 900 DEG -930 DEG C. preferably in a fluidized bed. The oxide formed may be leached with sulphuric acid and the sulphate solution electrolyzed to form metallic zinc. The spent electrolyte containing about 25% sulphuric acid may be employed to back further oxide. Some of the sulphate solution may be incorporated with the zinc sulphide to provide the necessary sulphate.
