Abstract

1,019,910. Pressing-iron. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Sept. 23,1963 [Nov. 9,1962], No. 37332/63. Heading D1A. A steam iron comprises a sole plate 21 and a heel rest 136 for supporting the iron in an upended position, a water reservoir 45 overlying the sole plate and secured thereto and transparent tube 109 connected to the rear of the reservoir and extending forwardly above the reservoir for indicating the liquid level in the reservoir when the iron is disposed on the heel rest. The tube is connected to the handle 62 which has a transparent top portion to facilitate the viewing of the liquid level. The iron is one of the spray and steam type and has separate boilers 25 and 33 to produce steam and spray. Water enters the reservoir 45 through an opening 79 in the front of the iron from there it is allowed into the boiler 25 where it is turned to steam and after passing through channels (not shown) inside the sole plate it passes to the fabric through vents 31. In order to produce a spray a piston 95 pumps water into the boiler 33 where it is flashed into steam and blown through a non return valve 85 (not shown) through the front of the iron on to the fabric. The piston 95 is operable by means of a trigger 115 under the handle. Temperature is controlled by a bimetallic switch 50 which is adjusted by a bell crank lever 54 operated by a rack and pinion gearing arrangement in which the pinion is connected to a knurled knob 125 located in the iron's handle. To control the amount of steam produced the valve 47 which meters the amount of water allowed into the flash boiler 25 is controlled by a knurled knob 125 similar in position to the knob 125.
