Abstract
976,771. Irons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 16, 1962], No. 1353/63. Heading D1A. [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] The handle 14 of an electric iron is collapsable into a stowage position, and includes a cavity 32 for receiving a handle bracket 23 secured to the coverplate 12, the handle pivoting about fastenings in the bracket (Fig. 3, not known). Latch 34, which can pivot about its lower end, is urged forwardly by spring 40, secured to the bracket 23, such that the shoulder on the latch engages portion 42 of the handle to lock it in the ironing position, backward manual pressure upon the latch permitting its disengagement, whereupon the handle rotates under its own weight into the stowage position, in which its front end rests against the cover 12. The iron, which includes a removably secured' water bottle for steam generation (Fig. 1, not shown) and a thermostat setting lever 20 movable with respect to a temperature dial 22, is operable at either one of two voltages, the button of the voltage selector switch (see Division H2) lying in the path of movement of the handle to its collapsed position, such that the switch is automatically set to the high voltage position upon stowage.
