[Also in Divisions A4 and H1] An electrically operated kettle comprises thermal means heated by steam or vapour generated on boiling to actuate a switch mechanism and interrupt the current supply to the heating element and means responsive to the weight of the kettle and operable to break the heater element circuit when the water in the kettle falls below a predetermined level. To boil and discharge water automatically the shutter 12 is adjusted by finger knob 12a to close the steam vent 10 and render the bimetallic element 9 inoperative. Finger knob 22 is then pressed and control rod 21 is displaced through the abutment 23 to depress lever 18 which through link 14 rocks member 6 to the position shown in Fig. 2 to permit the contacts 5 to close. The movement of the finger knob 22 also displaces latch member 30 to a position where lug 31 is above the slot 32 and under the weight of the kettle and contents the lever moves upwards relative to the kettle and against the spring 27. When the water boils it discharges through tube 36 and when the water level falls to a predetermined level the lever 24 is moved down by spring 27 to release the latch member 31, freeing latch 30 and returning the control rod to its original position. The inner end of lever 24 exerts upward pressure on lever 18 and through link 14 rocks the switch actuating member 6 to break the heater circuit. To use the kettle for boiling without automatic discharge the tube 36 is removed and shutter 12 set to leave vent 12 open so that emergent steam on boiling causes bimetallic element 9 to operate switch actuating member 6 via plunger 11. Fold down strut 1 co-operates with the handle to lock the lid.
