A central buffer coupling comprises a beam 10, Fig. 2, rigidly connected to spring housings 1 and pivoted by a pin 9 to a railway vehicle underframe, a coupling shank 3 pivoted about a horizontal bolt 4 to a slidable carriage 7 fixed to a plate 11, rods 17 slidable through the plate 11 and spring abutment discs 18a, discs 18 secured to the rods 17, and sleeves 20 abutting the discs 18a and the plate 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 each housing accommodates two springs separated by a disc 18b and the sleeves 20 have head parts 20a which react with the front plate la or the friction segments 16 to damp the buff and draw stresses. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate the guide arrangements between the housings 1 and the carriage 7, and a block 15, Fig. 4, integral with the bars 7a is slidable horizontally in the vehicle cross beam 21. In Fig. 7 (not shown) and Fig. 8 the shank 3 comprises two telescopic parts 23, 24 which are thrust apart by a spring 25 and are coupled together by a rod 28 and by pegs 30 in slots 32 providing a lost motion connection. The spring 25 may absorb both buff and draw forces or be arranged to absorb only buffing forces. Damping arrangements such as 16 and 20 may be used between the parts 23, 24.
