Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A sealed magnetic reed contact unit comprises two reeds of electrically and magnetically conducting material sealed into an enclosure which is evacuated or filled with an inert gas, the overlapping contact portions of the reeds being coated with palladium in such a way that substantially no diffusion of the palladium into the bodies of the reeds occurs. The reeds are made from a nickel-iron alloy and the overlapping ends are coated with a layer of palladium of the order of 2-5 microns thick by electrolytic-deposition or by a welding process. The initial thickness of the palladium coating is such that immediately after manufacture, the release power of the contacts is in the upper portion of its tolerance range.
