Abstract

Petroleum waxes are hydrogenatively refined in the presence of a catalyst based on a compound of molybdenum and metals of Group VIII, alone or in admixture, supported or unsupported, which catalyst has been activated by being used for the hydrodesulphurization of petroleum distillates. Examples of catalysts are:-cobalt molybdate, molybdena/nickel oxide, cobalt oxide/ferric oxide/molybdena, all supported on alumina. Preferred hydrodesulphurization conditions are:-250-375 DEG C., 10-50 bars. Preferred wax refining conditions are:-200-350 DEG C., 10-200 bars.
