Abstract

1,018,299. Moderator structures. SOC. DES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. March 11, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 9513/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor reflector is formed of an annular ring of graphite blocks which are urged inwards against the pressure vessel by springs mounted on the external thermal shield. The blocks are air-cooled, bonded together by graphite keys and are shaped so that adjacent blocks engage only at the radially outermost surfaces so as to reduce the distorting effect of Wigner growth. Heat insulating bands are mounted on the reflector outer cylindrical surface, at the upper and lower ends, to reduce cooling and hence Wigner growth, at these areas. The springs bear against vertical metal bars which extend the full height of the reflector and which lie in vertical grooves in the periphery of the graphite ring. A horizontal reflector, which closes the lower end of the annular ring, is formed of two separate layers of graphite bars.
