Abstract

The dust in the effluent gas of a coal-burning furnace is removed by adding 15-200 parts per million of gaseous SO3 to the gas, after which it passes through a mechanical dust catcher, such as an expansion chamber, baffle chamber or cyclone separator, whose efficiency is said to be increased by the SO3. The SO3 is produced by evaporating liquid SO3 and is injected into the hot flue gas in a stream of air.
