Abstract
553,388. Sulphuric acid. ROBSON, S., and NATIONAL PROCESSES, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1942, No. 719. [Classes 1 (i) and 1 (ii)] Sulphur dioxide obtained by burning pyrites &c. is subjected to dry purification and cooled to 100-120‹ C. before use in the contact process of producing sulphuric acid. Preferably the pyrites and the combustion air are dried. The Figure illustrates a plant in which pyrites from a bin 2 are dried in a drier 3 and burned in a flash roasting plant 1 supplied with air from a drier 8. The gases of combustion are passed through a cyclone 9, waste heat boiler 10, electrostatic precipitator 11 and cooler 12 where arsenious oxide is condensed at about 100‹ C. In chamber 13 any sulphur trioxide present is neutralized by injecting lime dust, and the gases then pass through a bag filter 14 to the converter 16.
