Abstract

Roasting and combustion gases containing sulphur dioxide are washed and cooled in two or more stages by direct cooling with a liquid which is circulated in a separate cycle for each stage, the whole or a part of the cooling liquid from the first stage being subjected to a direct cooling operation by the evaporation of water therefrom and the cooling liquid in subsequent stages being cooled by cooling surfaces. Evaporation of water from the first stage cooling liquid may be effected exterior to the washing zone under vacuum or by passage therethrough of cold air in a tower or rotating tube, or by trickling the cooling liquid over acid-resistant material stacked in the open air. In each case the cooled liquid is passed through a settler to remove solid deposits, chiefly arsenic trioxide, before recirculation. The first stage cooling is effected at as high a temperature as possible to minimize sulphur dioxide losses. According to examples (1) gases containing 10 per cent by volume SO2 are cooled from 400 DEG to 78 DEG C. in a first stage cooling by means of 45 per cent sulphuric acid entering at 55 DEG C. A portion of the hot acid is then passed to vacuum vessel where by evaporation of water the temperature is lowered to 35 DEG C. The cooled acid passes to a settler where arsenic trioxide is removed and then to a mixing vessel where it is mixed with the remainder of the hot acid to adjust the temperature to 55 DEG C. and to form a mixture no longer saturated with arsenic trioxide, which is then recycled. The gas from the first stage is passed to a second stage where it is cooled to 30 DEG C. by spraying with a recirculated wash liquid from which the heat is removed by cooling surfaces. (2) In cooling a gas as in Example 1 from 400 DEG to 70 DEG C., the washing liquid entering at 60 DEG C., leaves at 90 DEG C. and part is cooled to 35 DEG C. by passing air at 20 DEG C. therethrough. Impurities are removed as before and the cooled liquid mixed with the remainder to re-form a mixture at 60 DEG C. which is recycled. The second stage cooling is as before. Specification 742,052 is referred to.
