Abstract
1,018,081. Cooling loose materials; cooling briquettes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. May 8, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 5441/62. Headings F4B and F4U. In apparatus for cooling hot combustible briquettes, or similar lumps of material, the briquettes are carried on a mesh conveyer 1 through an elongated inclined chamber 3, containing a bed of sand fluidized by a cold inert gas, and are discharged over a low weir 2. Cold sand from a hopper 12 passes through the chamber 3 by gravity, in counterflow to the briquettes, the heated sand being discharged over a weir 4 into a downpipe 5, from which it is carried to a fluidized bed sand cooler 7 by the action of a cold air injector 6. Cooling in the chamber 7 is by a cold water coil 8. The cold sand leaves chamber 7 at 9 and is returned to the hopper 12 by means of an injector 10 the sand being separated from the carrier air stream by a cyclone 11. Prior to entering the cooler 7, hot sand may be passed through a precooler (Fig. 2, not shown) in which water is injected into a fluidized bed of the sand by means of a spray device.
