Abstract
<PICT:1124780/C1/1> Melts, solutions or slurries of ammonium compounds are granulated by spraying the melt or slurry on to a fluidized bed comprising small cores of the solid, the solids being put in at one end of the bed which moves longitudinally and withdrawn at the other. An elongated trough 1 is mounted on springs 2 and is vibrated vertically and longitudinally by means 4. The cores 13 forming the fluidized bed rest on grid 3 through which a gas is supplied from blower 5 via valve 6 and flexible tube 7, the gas being extracted through tube 10 and fan 11. Melt or slurry is sprayed on to the bed from nozzles 14 arranged adjustably above the bed, and the particles are moved along the bed by vibration from 4 and optionally by inclination of the bed 13 to the horizontal. The coated cores comprising the product are removed at 16 where the bed is no longer fluidized and are graded, small particles being returned to the bed via shoot 12. The fluidizing gas may react with the particles to harden them and may be a mixture of gases in which case the trough 1 may be divided into sections each with its own gas feed means. The gas may be heated to dry the granules. The process is particularly applicable to fertilizer materials, especially ammonium nitrate solutions and the slurries and postes formed in the manufacture of complex fertilizers in the nitrosulphuric, nitrophosphoric and nitrocarbonic processes.
