Abstract

1,017,993. Preventing fires. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 30,1962 [May 5, 1961], No.16519/61. Heading A5A. A container for the storage and conveyance of solid pyrophoric material is lined with a solid fused layer of a fire extinguishing agent based on a mixture of inorganic salts, which layer is separated from the free interior space of the containers by a membrane collapsible by heat. A container 11 with a lid 15 has two lining layers, the outer 21 being of thermally insulating material in granular form which is separated by a mild steel liner 20 from the inner layer 24 of a solid fused mass of a fire-extinguishing agent separated from the free interior space of the container by a contiguous, cup-shaped liner 23 of a synthetic thermoplastic resin which is collapsible by heat. The agent comprises a eutectic mixture of inorganic salts selected from the chlorides and fluorides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. The melting point of the mixture may be below 640‹C and additions for drying purposes may include a metallic soap, e,g. 2¢% by weight of magnesium stearate.
