Abstract

The invention comprises water-soluble dyes of the formula:-<FORM:1017616/C4-C5/1> in which A is a 1-amino-2-sulpho-anthra-quinonyl-4-residue which may contain further sulphonic acid groups, each X radical is hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenoxy or alkoxy group or a hydroxy, halogen, carboxyl or formyl group, Y is sulpho, sulphonamide, sulphon-alkylamide or alkyl sulphonyl, or when an X radical contains a water-solubilizing group Y may be hydrogen, R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and acyl is the residue of a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 3 carbon atoms and bearing in b -position a substituent enabling an acyl residue to enter into combination with cellulose fibres, or of an unsubstituted a :b -unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid. The dyes are made by acylating an anthraquinone of the above general formula, but wherein the acyl residue is replaced by hydrogen, with a halide or anhydride of the acid from which the acyl residue is derived. Acids specified are b -chloro- and b -bromo-propionic, b -chloro-acrylic, acrylic, b -chlorocrotonic, propiolic, b - methylmercaptopropionic, b - phenylmercaptopropionic, b - phenoxypropionic, b -phenylsulphonylpropionic, b -methylsulphonylpropionic, b -ethylsulphonylpropionic and b -(31 - carboxyphenylsulphonyl)propionic acids. The dyes dye cotton, regenerated cellulose, wool, silk, polyamides, leather and paper in reddish-blue to blue shades.
