Relates to push-button and/ or tip actuated mechanical pencils in which front and rear barrel portions 11 and 10 respectively can still be rotated relative to each other to advance or retract the lead. In a tipactuated type of mechanical pencil, Fig. 10, a propelling mechanism of the helical groove type comprising members 16<SP>1</SP> and 19, rotatable relative to each other, is mounted for longitudinal, non-rotatable movement in the front barrel portion 11<SP>1</SP> of the pencil. A pawl 25 attached to member 19 cooperates with two rings of ratchet teeth or cams 27, 31 fixed to the rear barrel portion 10<SP>1</SP> of the pencil. A spring 45 biases the propelling mechanism towards the front barrel portion. Depressing the tip 16<SP>11</SP> causes the pawl 25 to ride up the cam surface 34 and upon releasing the tip, the pawl rides down cam surface 30. Relative rotation is therefore caused between members 16<SP>1</SP> and 19 of the propelling mechanism, and the lead 17 is advanced. In a modification of the above embodiment, illustrated in Fig. 13 (not shown), members 35<SP>1</SP> and 36<SP>1</SP> which are fixed within the barrel of the pencil of Fig. 10, are mounted for longitudinal, non-rotatable movement within the rear barrel portion. Depressing members 35<SP>1</SP> and 36<SP>1</SP>, push-button wise, moves cams 27 and 31 downward with respect to the propelling mechanism 19, 16<SP>1</SP>, and the pawl 25 provides the relative rotation to advance the lead. Figs. 15 to 18 (not shown) illustrate different cam arrangements, wherein the two rings of cams are attached to member 19 and the pawls are arranged on the inner surface of the rear barrel portion. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 1 to 9 (not shown), the propelling mechanism is fixed to the front barrel portion and pushbutton actuated cams provide the relative rotation to advance the lead. In the modification of Fig. 13 (not shown), notches 67 and 68 in cam members 27<SP>1</SP> and 31<SP>1</SP> engage the pawl 251, so that relative rotation of the front and rear barrel portions of the pencil causes the lead to advance or retract.
