Abstract
1,052,922. Multiple retractable ball-point pens. W. A. BOSSERT. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 22, 1962], No. 33039/63. Heading B6P. In a multiple retractable ball-point pen having a telescopic cap portion 2, a drop lever 15 is supported within the cap 2 from a member 14 of polygonal cross-section. Tilting the pen in a particular direction selects the particular writing member holder 3 to be projected. The member 14 slides within a complementary sleeve 16 fixed to the barrel portion 1 of the pen and prevents any relative rotation between the cap 2 and the barrel 1. Guide lugs 17 projecting within the sleeve 16 guide the lever into cooperation with the particular holder 3 to be selected. The retaining mechanism of the projecting mechanism comprises two cylindrical members 4 and 7, Fig. 3, mounted within the barrel 1. A guide lug or ear 5 on each holder 3 co-operates with a slot 6 in member 4 and cam surface 8 on member 7. A selected holder 3 is retained in the projected position by the cam 8 until another holder 3 is projected which partly rotates member 7 within member 4, thus releasing the holder 3 which is retracted by a tension spring 12. Cut-away portions (not illustrated) at the top of the cap 2 allow different coloured sections of portion 22 to be seen, thus illustrating the various colours and positions of the writing members within the barrel. The writing members may be ball-point pen cartridges or pencil leads.
