1,016,881. Zoom lenses. VOIGTLANDER A. G. July 10, 1962 [Aug. 11,1961], No. 26555/62. Heading G2J. A variable fresh length lens comprising a series of fixed and movable elements in front of the diaphragm 22 such as a front member 16, variator 17, erector 18 and compensator 19, has a multi-element convergent relay 12 behind the diaphragm comprising a negative member 20 followed by a positive meniscus member 21 so arranged as to form together a meniscus convex to the image the sum of the absolute values of the two exterior radii R 5 , R 6 of member 21 being less than 2. 5 times the focal length of the relay 12 and the absolute value of the sum of the refractive powers of the adjacent surfaces R 4 , R 5 of members 20, 21, plus 1. 27 times the refractive power of component 23,if provided, between member 20 and the diaphragm 22 is more than 55% but less than 255% of the total power of the relay 12, the member 21 being followed by collective elements 31 and an asymmetric doublet 27. Member 21 may be a cemented doublet or triplet. Optical data are provided for one example of relay 12 which is as shown except that component 23 is n not provided.
