Abstract

1,016,873. Stringed musical instruments. J. KOSTLER, W. KOSTLER, J. KRONER, and F. WEIK, [trading as KOSTLER & CO.]. July 9, 1962 [July 8, 1961], No. 26333/62. Heading G5J. A device for stopping chords on a stringed instrument such as a guitar comprises keyoperation slides 5 carrying cams 7 engaging arms 8 to rotate selected shafts 1 mounted parallel to the strings 2 of the instrument. Keys 6a, 6b, 6c &c. operate the slides. As a shaft 1 rotates, it operates a linkage 9 to turn a lever 4 about a pivot 20 to bring a contact piece 21, which may be of rubber, into contact with a string. Each lever 4 is biased away from the string by a leaf spring 12. In Fig. 3, each vertical column of shafts corresponds to a string and each horizontal lever corresponds to a fret. The device is mounted in a troughshaped casing 24 which is secured to the neck of the guitar by screws 27, nuts 34 and a strap 33.
