[Class 88 (ii)] The strings of a violin or the like are attached to the hooked ends d<SP>1</SP> of bell-crank levers positioned in slots in the tail-piece a and pivoted on a common axle c, the other ends d<SP>2</SP> of the levers being engaged by set-screws e threaded into the tail-piece, so that the tension of each string may be readily adjusted. Projections d<SP>3</SP> on the levers ensure that the ends d<SP>2</SP> cannot damage the instrument case in the event of a string breaking.
