Abstract

The invention comprises anthraquinone disperse dyes which are devoid of sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups but which contain at least one group of the formula -X-(CH2)nOCH2CH2CN in which X represents a divalent group which may be -O-, -NH-, -OCH2CH2O-, -NH-Ph-, -SO2-, -SO2NR-, -CO.O-, -CONR-, -O-Ph-SO2NR1-, -NH-Ph-CO-O-, -NH-Ph-O-, or -NH-Ph-SO2NR-, in which R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group, n is at least 2 and Ph is phenyl. The dyes are made by reacting acrylonitrile with an anthraquinone compound containing at least one hydroxyalkyl group wherein the hydroxyl group is a primary group and the alkyl radical contains at least 2 carbon atoms, in the presence of a basic compound. The process includes the manufacture of those dyes in which the bridge grouping -X- is absent. Preferably an excess of acrylonitrile is used and heating is not generally required but may be used. Synthetic textile materials may be coloured with the dyes in red, blue and green shades.ALSO:Synthetic materials are dyed with disperse dyes of the anthraquinone series which contain at least one b -cyanoethoxyalkyl group the group being attached either directly or by a bridge member to the anthraquinone nucleus. Materials specified are polyesters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrate, cellulose di and triacetates which are dyed red, blue and green shades.
