1422542 Cationic naphthostyril dyes SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 March 1973 [25 March 1972 27 April 1972] 14277/73 Heading C4P Cationic naphthostyril compounds have the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl or a C 1 -C 2 alkoxy- or cyano-substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl group, R<SP>2</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenyl, C 1 -C 2 alkoxy-substituted phenyl, C 7 -C 8 aralkyl or cyclohexyl, R<SP>3</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy-substituted C 1 -C 2 alkyl or phenoxy-substituted C 1 -C 2 alkyl, X is H, halogen or N,N-di-C 1 -C 4 alkylsulphonamide, Y is H, C 1 -C 2 alkyl or halogen, n is 1 or 2, and Z<SP>(1)</SP> is an anion. The dyes may be made by reacting an N- alkyl-naphthostyril with an N,N-dialkylaniline containing an esterified hydroxy group, and then hydrolysing this group. They produce dyes giving light blue of improved light fastness, employable as a "three-primary colour dye", suitable for use with acid-modified polyester, polyacrylonitrile or polyamide fibres.
