Abstract

A process for the production of a metal-pyridine interaction product comprises the interaction of aluminium or magnesium with pyridine or an alkyl pyridine in the presence of a pyridinium salt. The salt is preferably a salt of pyridine with a strong mineral acid or is a quaternary pyridinium salt. The pyridinium salt may be used in the form of a previously prepared salt or may be formed in situ from a precursor which reacts with the pyridine to form a pyridinium salt, many such compounds being specified. The reaction is preferably conducted in the absence of oxygen and water. The reaction mixture may be treated with water or an oxidizing agent to convert the metal-pyridine interaction product to bipyridyls. Examples are given.
