Abstract
Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are produced by passing the hydrocarbon, HCl and O2 or free O2-containing gas at 200-500 DEG C. over a catalyst comprising copper oxide and/or iron oxide combined with at least one of the oxides: P2O5, TiO2, SiO2, B2O3, MoO3, V2O5, WO3, UO3, As2O3; and at least one of the oxides: BeO, PbO, MgO, CaO, ZnO, SrO, CdO, BaO, Al2O3, SnO, Bi2O3, Sb2O3, Cr2O3, MnO, CaO, NiO, Ce2O3, La2O3; the combination of oxides being formed by wet gelling followed by drying and calcination. The catalyst can be used as such, or supported on a porous inert carrier, e.g. "Celite" Trade Mark), pumice, or silicon carbide; and is employed in fixed or fluidized bed. In the examples, the chlorination of methane to methyl chloride, methylene dichloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride; of ethane to ethyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethane, and trichloroethane; and of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethane, and trichloroethanes, are described; and solutions of Na silicate, Al(NO3)3, CuCl2, (NH4)2HPO4, MgCl2, and Fe(NO3)3\t are used as sources of the oxides.ALSO:Cl2 is produced by passing HCl and O2 or free-O2-containing gas at 200-500 DEG C. over a catalyst comprising copper oxide and/or iron oxide combined with at least one of the oxides: P2O5, TiO2, SiO2, B2O3, MoO3, V2O5, WO3, UO3, As2O3; and at least one of the oxides: BeO, PbO, MgO, CaO, CnO, SrO, CdO, BaO, Al2O3, SnO, Bi2O3, Sb2O3, Cr2O3, MnO, CoO, NiO, Cl2O3, La2O3; the combination of oxides being formed by wet gelling followed by drying and calcination. The catalyst can be used as such, or supported on a porous inert carrier, e.g. "celite" (T.M.) pumice, or silicon carbide; and is employed in fixed or fluidized bed. In the examples, solution of Na silicate, Al(NO3)3, CuCl2, (NH4)2HPO4, MgCl2, and Fe(NO3)3 are used as sources of the oxides.
