A composite piston ring comprises two subrings each divided into two or more segments, the segments in one sub-ring being radially overlapping and the segments in the other subring being axially overlapping. The sub-rings may be axially or radially arranged in the piston ring groove. Each radially arranged sub-ring may be further divided into axially arranged secondary sub-rings. The sub-rings may have a rectangular cross-section, a channel-shaped cross-section or an L-shaped cross-section. In Fig. 5, a radially outer sub-ring A is nested within a channel-shaped inner sub-ring B. In Fig. 7, the inner sub-ring B has a portion received within the channel-shaped outer subring. In Fig. 8, a sub-ring B is enclosed by radially inner and outer sub-ring A, C and transmits pressure from an expansion spring bearing on the sub-ring C to the sub-ring A. When an expansion spring is provided in the piston grease, the radially inner sub-ring may be grooved on its inner periphery to accommodate it. The expansion spring may be given an undulating form bearing alternately against the inner sub-ring and the bottom of the groove in the piston. Alternatively, the expansion spring may be in the form of a leaf-spring secured to the inner periphery of the inner subring.
