Abstract

1,016,012. Suction lifting devices; stacking machines. BASON & SONS Ltd. April 4, 1962 [April 4, 1961], No. 11896/61. Headings B8C and B8H. Apparatus for handling bricks or similar articles comprises a gripper head 19 mounting suction nozzles 23 suspended from a carriage 20 movable on rails 21 between a receiving platform 12 and a trolley 59 for conveying a stack of bricks to a kiln. Once the head 19 is raised from the platform 12 the gripper nozzles 23 are separated either to form gaps between certain rows in the stack to allow the insertion of fork lift tines or to form uniform gaps between rows to allow ventilation in the kiln. Alternate rows in the stack are stacked at right angles to each other and the head is turned by pneumatic rams during its movement. Bricks are conveyed in rows to the platform 12 and when five have arrived in a row a trip is operated to cause a ram to move the platform 12 over rollers 18 under the head 19 which by a manual trip is caused to lower until the suction nozzles contact the bricks and suction is automatically applied. A manual trip causes hydraulic rams to set a shaft running through slide bars between the brick rows so that upon the head 19 rising hydraulic rams cause the bars to separate to the spacing set. The carriage 20 is then moved over the platform 59 and the head 19 descends to stack the bricks and in alternate layers the head is rotated through 90 degrees to rotate the rows of bricks. Buffer rams 56, 61 stop the carriage 20 in the end position and the suction nozzles are automatically drawn into mutual contact as the head lowers over the platform 12.
