Abstract

A timber substitute comprises dried wood wool, of strand length at least 3 inches, treated with a thermosetting resin and compacted. The dry resin content is preferably 6-10% by weight based on the wood wool; the resin is preferably urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde. The resin may be diluted, and may be sprayed on to the wood wool. The composition may include reinforcing elements of timber, metal or plastic. The board may be more than 3 inches thick, and the density may be e.g. 9-30 lb/cu. ft. The composition may be compressed at e.g. 20-80 p.s.i., and cured at e.g. 100 DEG C., and may be heated externally, by blowing heated air through the material, or by high-frequency electric induction. A surface layer of different material, e.g. a wood veneer or panel, or a sheet of synthetic plastics or metal, may be applied.
