Abstract

101,578. Thom, J. C. Feb. 19, 1916. Packing and filling pulverulent material into tins.-A machine for filling rigid containers with a definite quantity of pulverulent material, such as snuff, is characterized by means for introducing successive charges so as to fill the container each time, each charge being compressed by means which are adjustable so as to enclose a predetermined quantity. A hopper 16 having narrow longitudinal outlets 19, Fig. 6, in the base is arranged between similar rotary transporting - devices 18, 18<a> which carry the compressing-means. Empty containers are supplied to the belt 52; they are deflected at 51a and pushed forward by an horizontal notched wheel 56 along a run-way 49a under an outlet 19, against which they make contact. Having received a charge, the containers are taken round on an horizontal plate 36 by means of the notched wheel 37 and come under plungers 40, which are moved vertically by the engagement of projections 46 with a stationary cam-groove in a ring 44. The containers then pass back at 49b under a second filling-outlet, through the second compressing-device 18a, and then at 49<c> under a third outlet which completes the filling to a delivery belt 59. The ring carrying the cam-groove is vertically adjustable on the uprights 26 so as to vary the total quantity. The apparatus can be modified to provide additional charges and compressions.
