Abstract

1310029 Packaging filamentary material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 38366/70 Heading B8C A method of packaging filamentary tow 5 comprises supporting a substantially air impermeable liner 3 within an open topped container 1 having an upward extension 2 of the walls thereof, feeding the filamentary tow into the liner with a traversing motion to provide substantially uniform laying of the two in successive layers over the whole plan area of the container until a predetermined quantity of tow has been fed into the liner, evacuating air from the liner by means of a suction probe 7 above the layered tow until the tow is compacted and then enclosing it in restraining means. As shown, the mouth of the liner is closed around the probe 7 during compaction and the extension telescopes over the container 1. Upon completion of compaction, the extension 2 is withdrawn and the filled liner is withdrawn for insertion into a packing case 11 for dispatch.
