Abstract

728,903. Packaging-machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Dec. 10, 1952 [Oct. 20, 1951 ; Oct. 30, 1951], Nos. 24520/51 and 25283/51. Class 94 (1). Apparatus for forming packages containing a plastic substance comprises means for pressing successive wrappers into successive pockets or moulds provided in a conveyer, the open-ended containers thus formed then being charged with the plastic substance and ejected from the conveyer pockets. Wrapper blanks 11 comprising a body portion 18 and a lid 19 are formed in succession from a web 12 by a punching device 13, a knife 14 severing the blanks from each other. As each blank is fed forward by a pair of rollers 17, a pocket-wheel conveyer 21 is rotated to move one of a series of pockets 22 to a forming station 16, the body 18 of the blank 11 being formed into a hemispherical cup by a presser member 23 engaging in the pocket. The pocket-wheel rotates stepby-step and the cups move in turn to a filling station 28 where ice-cream is extruded from a nozzle 29 and is cut off by wires 31 to form a charge 33. After the filling operation, the lid of each cup is folded over by a plough 38 and after being ejected by a plunger operated by means of a cam track 43 and roller 42, the cup is passed on to a delivery conveyer 47 by guides 46. Separate lids may be used in place of the lids 19 or the containers may be of a sufficient depth to permit the forming into a lateral seam of the, surplus material, the seam being secured by crimping if desired. Alternatively, the surplus material may be folded or twisted. Separate re-usable moulds which may be of metal, rubber or plastic may be removably mounted in the pocketed conveyer so as to be ejected with the packed charges. The plastic substance,may be contained in a hopper and formed into successive charges at the mouth of the hopper. The pocketed conveyer may be of a chain type and the wrapper blanks may be preformed. According to the provisional specifications, the presser member for forming the containers may be combined with the extrusion nozzle, the containers thus being formed and filled at one station.
