Abstract

101,479. Wullyamoz, F., and Meyer, G. Sept 14, 1915, [Convention date]. Leakage, stopping.-A breach mat comprises a rectangular or other flexible tube frame f filled with compressed air, gas, cr liquid and supported in a framework of rigid bars linked at the ends, as at p, and covered by flexible material i, such as tarred canvas or rubber. The links p are each provided with a tongue to press the canvas i against the tube frame f. The inflated frame f may be combined with a bladder or bag-like in. flated member. The mat is suspended by chains k from a truck d running on rails b, c. The truck carries an inflating-cylinder g, an electric motor o, and a winding-drum n with cords m connected to a lower roller on which the mat is normally wound; the mat can thus be brought to position and unrolled over a hole. A cable m<1> may pass under the ship to a winch on the other side to enable the roller to be rolled downwards in contact with the ship. A weight may be attached to the cable m' to hold the mat against the ship's side, or the cable may pass through a vertical conduit within the ship, or through a hole in the keel to the opposite side of the winch. The mat may be suspended from dav@ts. The bars h may be formed as electro-magnets to enable them to cling to the plating of the ship.
