Abstract
1,014,315. Packaging-machines. J. G. H. OLLIER, G. F. GROSSHANS, and R. G. MASSON. Sept. 17, 1962, No. 35392/62. Heading B8C. A method of making a closed box containing a product having poor flow characteristics comprises, arranging an open-topped-box together with a top closure immediately above it in an enclosure, reducing the pressure within the enclosure, securing the top closure to the box, and restoring the pressure within the enclosure to atmospheric pressure. The invention is described applied to a machine as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of Specification 866,314 in which the welding device is replaced by apparatus according to the invention. The apparatus comprises a block 47 secured to a plate 37 and formed with three cavities 48 so that the device can deal with three boxes at a time. The block and plate are first lowered and the strip in which box-forming pockets 1a have been moulded and filled and the closure forming strip 2 are conveyed into the device, the boxes being each supported by a container with base 54 and side walls 63, mounted on the top of supporting rods 53. The block and plate are then raised until a gasket 43, on the top of the block comes into contact with the domed top member of the station 42, thus forming a gas-tight enclosure 45, which is evacuated. A heated sealing member 36 is then moved downwards by a jack 58 and presses the strip 2 into contact with the peripheral parts of the open-topped boxes. Finally, air is readmitted to the enclosure 45 thus creating a pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the box, subsequent movement of at least one side thereof causing the product substantially to fill the box.
