Abstract

1,206,023. Closing packages. MAHAFFY & HARDER ENG. CO. 23 Feb., 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 9028/68. Heading B8C. Semi rigid plastics cup-shaped receptacles containing articles, e.g. meat-slices, are conveyed below operating stations where a flexible web is heat-sealed to their mouth flanges to form a cover and stretched permanently to form side walls and a central face, the face being plunged into the receptacle to abut the upper surface of the articles contained therein, the receptacles then being evacuated and if desired, gas-filled. A web in which cup-shaped receptacles 12 containing articles 16, have been drawn e.g. by vacuum, in transverse rows or singly, is conveyed in trays 10. A plastics web 24 is heat-sealed to the cup mouth flanges at a station A, while a central section is suctionally adhered to a thermally insulated member 30 so that only an annular area against a sloping roof member 32 is also heated during sealing. While the annular area is still soft side walls are formed at a station B by suctionally moulding the web in a die 20, which is water-cooled to minimize "creep-back". A spring-loaded plunger 40 then pushes the cover into the receptacle so that the central face 37 abuts articles 16. The receptacles are evacuated at station C by means of a web lifter, described in U.S. Patent 3,061,984, which operates through a slit 54, Fig. 2 (showing a pair of receptacles) to create evacuation passages, the chamber in the die 27 is evacuated sumultaneously to minimize the pressure differential. The web lifter is withdrawn after evacuation and the slit 54 heat-sealed. The chamber 22 is then opened to atmospheric pressure which presses the web against the articles. Resilient pads 60 may be provided to prevent the inrushing air from distorting the cover.
