Abstract

Powder compositions, for dispersion in water to provide cleaning solutions for metal, glass and painted surfaces, comprise (a) a lignocellulose component constituted by ground corn cobs and/or ground nut shells; (b) a detergent component constituted by one or more water-soluble inorganic alkalis and/or acids and (c) a wetting agent constituted by one or more organic anionic and/or non-ionic wetting agents, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being 1 : 3 to 3 : 1. Specified components (b) are sodium hydroxide; sodium metasilicate; sodium orthosilicate; sodium carbonate; sodium bicarbonate; sodium tetrapyrophosphate; sodium hexametaphosphate; sodium tripolyphosphate; sodium borate; trisodium phosphate and disodium phosphate; sodium hydrogen sulphate; monosodium phosphate; phosphoric acid; sodium, zinc, magnesium and ammonium fluorosilicates; sodium and ammonium bifluorides; ammonium chloride; sulphamic acid; and fluoroboric acid. In the case of the alkalis the potassium salts may also be used. Wetting agents used are sodium alkyl aryl sulphonates wherein the alkyl group has 8 to 16 carbon atoms and the aryl group is phenyl or naphthyl, e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate; C8 to C16 sodium alkyl sulphates, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate; C8 to C16 sodium alkyl sulphonates, e.g. sodium dodecyl sulphonate; sodium aryl sulphonates, e.g. sodium tetrahydronaphthalene sulphonate; sodium salts of fatty acids having C8 to C16 carbon atoms e.g. sodium stearate; sodium lignosulphonates; alkylphenol-ethylene oxide condensates, the alkyl group having 8 to 16 carbon atoms; polyoxyethylene thioethers; propylene oxide-ethylene oxide condensates; fatty acid alkanolamides, the fatty acid containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. lauric acid alkanolamide; and alkyl polyethylene oxy ethanols. The aqueous dispersions may have a pH of from 1 to 12.5 and the powder may contain 1 to 10% of the wetting agent. The aqueous solutions are used preferably at 300 to 1000 p.s.i.g. and 120 DEG F. and contain 1/3 to 8 ounces of powder per U.S. gallon of water.
